Caribbean Experience Barbados
I have been to this Caribbean paradise couple of years ago but it must be my best holidays ever. The flight took about 8 and half hours so it wasn’t that’s bad. We knew that we are entering quite chilled out country but haven’t expected the custom officers to be so relaxed that as an only plane landing at that time we were queuing for 2 hours to go through the customs. Which taken the weather into the account was quite hot and sweaty experience. After that we were free to enjoy our holidays.
Our villa was on the west coast right in front of the turquoise Caribbean Sea just a stroll away from the exclusive celebrity occupied Sandy Lane Hotel. So we were able to sunbathe/sunburn next to the more fortunate among us.
Barbados is a very small island in fact you can pretty much see all the island in 1 day as it takes just couple of hours to cross from one coast to another. So we rented a car for couple days and travelled the island through and through. The best way of travel though and I cannot recommend it strong enough are the famous yellow busses which are privately owned and the drivers always try to overtake each other and steal the business which is great fun. You get the reggae music blurring really loudly and the occasional animal on the board. There are also blue buses which are government owned but they aren’t half as much fun. We took the yellow bus to Bridgetown – which is the capital of the island. It is very colourful and still have very colonial feel to it. There are a lot of fruit markets all over the place and I nave never seen avocados so big in my life.
People of Barbados are very friendly and we made a lot of friends with the locals while we were there. Especially with the guys who rent out the jets skies which were great fun as you could even far away from the coast see the bottom of the sea. It was amazing experience. There were a lot of attractions like going turtle watching but we were lucky enough and seen the turtles from the coast as they came very close. Another great experience was visiting local Animal Park where you could see a lot of tortoise roaming around in quite compromising positions to be honest. They were all at it. Another amusing experience were the local monkeys, who were little thieving thugs as they were always stealing your sunglasses, food basically anything and then laughing into your face. It was great fun.
If you do rent a car I would definitely recommend to visit the east coast of the island know as Soup Bowl – this part of the island is on the Atlantic side and very well known amid surfers. It’s very contrasting to the Caribbean Sea an equally beautiful.
As for food there is very well known food festival every Friday in Oistins where you can taste all different kinds of fish. It can be very busy as it’s quite famous between the locals as well as tourists.
Well I spent 3 weeks on the island and probably wouldn’t go for such a long time again if you don’t want your brain to turn into sponge and not because of the amount of rum you’ll be drinking but because the way of life here is so chilled and relaxed.
