The small fishing village of Mastichari is a hidden wonder, and just a ten minute drive from the airport, on the beautiful island of Kos. The resort here is perfect if you want to relax and unwind with many beachfront restaurants, bars and tourist shops – the Greek people are also etremely friendly, and they want to make sure that your stay is comfortable and memorable.

If you're expecting clubs and a wild nightlife that some people expect then you’ll be disappointed - what you will find in Mastichari are small bars, where you can drink an ice cold Mythos beer or shot of Ouzo and watch the sunset. Then relax eating the local Greek cuisine at one of the many restaurants.

The beach is gorgeous – and actually one of the nicest beaches on the Island. I spent a lot of time on the beach listening to music on my iPod, reading, and it was great not having to fight for a sun lounger on the beach.

I found two Greek restaurants in the village, both of which doexcellent food, a superb service, and friendly waiters, who made you feel welcome and at ease - I quickly found myself getting into a routine, waking up at 8am, taking a walk along the beach, going back to the apartment, and taking a shower – then on for breakfast at Kali Kardia Taverna to plan the day ahead.

In the evening the Horizon bar is ideal for a few ice cold Mythos beers, and the Tasty Palace, a beachfront restaurant serves the nicest Greek and International food on the Island. The Kali Kardia is also ideal for a few drinks as well as breakfast.

Mastichari has a really regular bus service - you can take a scenic bus ride to the quaint hillside town of Kefalas, or the cosmopolitan Kos town, and explore the island, or you can visit the local travel agent where you can book your own day-trips, hire a car, or rent a bike, scooter or quad bike.

From the harbour you can also take a ferry to the island of Kalymnos, which takes around thirty minutes, and costs only €3.00 for a single fare. The island is home to sponge divers, fisherman and is also just perfect if you want to snorkel or take a walk up to the caves, and churches on the hillside.

What I love about Mastichari is that it’s not a built up tourist resort - let’s hope they keep it that way because any major developments would spoil the landscape and this picturesque fishing village, which has great links to the rest of the island.
