Here is a non-jargon explanation of the different options for a package holiday that is open to consumers.
Dynamic Package Holidays
Travel agents have recently been struggling to compete against online travel comapnies, who are able to offer packages much cheaper. But instead they offer consumers the opportunity to build their own package - allowing them to chose their accomodation, flights etc - you can either cut costs or find what you exactly want. This means that you can also take out services that you don't want, such as airport transfers or an in-flight meal, which will help you to save money too.
DIY Holidays
Consumers are becoming more confident about booking their holidays, and are becoming more independent from agents and companies. They are now booking their flights direct with the airline, as well as booking their own accomodation, car hire etc. This gives the consumer a much more flexible package, and more choice and control over who they fly with and where they stay. They are also able to look around the markets and find the best deals.
Package Holidays
This is a standard package holiday, which consists of the flight, ferry etc and accommodation and is sold by a travel agent or company on behalf of the travel operator. This option is more limited to specific airport departures, times etc and you generally have a smaller choice of accommodations to choose from.
As consumers we are all different – there’s no right or wrong option, and these decisions all depend on our own preferences and confidence. Which ever option you choose, make sure you buy adequate travel insurance, and also check out the travel company prior to booking - it is also important to check that they are members of ATOL, ABTA, TTA, etc.
